16 December 2013Swansea swimmer Jazz Carlin sets Welsh record at European Championships
Swansea swimmer Jazz Carlin set a new Welsh 800m freestyle record after winning her heat, finishing fourth overall in the European Short course Championship in Denmark.
An unusual timed format meant there was no direct final but three heats in separate sessions to determine the final standings.
Carlin had the disadvantage of being in the first morning heat where she was by far the strongest swimmer and had to compete virtually alone before recording a time of 8:16.91 to beat her opponents by 22 seconds.
The double Commonwealth Games medallist was also six seconds faster than the winner of the second heat meaning Carlin's time led going into the evening session when the final heat was being staged.
The final race was far more competitive with world record holder Mireia Belmonte Garcia recording a time of 8:05.18 to win her second continental title of the meet following her 200m butterfly victory on the opening night in which Welsh swimmer Jemma Lowe claimed bronze.
Denmark's Lotte Friis wound up second overall in 8:08.68 while the Netherlands' Sharon Rouwendaal clinched third-place in 8:14.24 in the final heat.
This was two seconds ahead of Carlin who finished fourth overall in the timed event with fellow British swimmer Hannah Miley (8:19.87) in seventh.
